Up on the Riviera, the streets are narrow, the driveways are steep, and parking is wherever you can find it. A guy had left his 2010 Outback on a side street while he spent the weekend down at the beach. When he got back, his key was gone. Not locked inside, not misplaced in a bag. Gone. A Lishi-style pick and decode tool reads the wafer positions in Subaru's side-milled lock cylinder, so I can figure out the exact cut pattern without the original key ever being present. That gave me the blade spec. I cut a new remote head key blank on the spot, then connected through the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost sequence. That process clears the old registered keys from the immobilizer and enrolls the new one as the primary. After that, the remote functions got synced.

He turned the key in the ignition right there on that steep little street. No tow, no dealer appointment, no waiting a week for parts to be ordered.

He mentioned the dealer had come up in his search and what they'd quoted. I just nodded. What we charged was a fraction of that, done in about 45 minutes, on a hill with a view of the ocean.
