A night janitor called me from a laundromat parking lot near the UCSB campus in Santa Barbara around 10:30 at night. His only key to his 2013 Outback was gone. No spare, no registration on him, no idea what a VIN was. He was about to call a tow truck just to get the car somewhere safe overnight.
I walked him through it on the phone. Told him to look through the windshield, bottom left on the driver's side. He found the VIN. Then I had him check his insurance app for the registration. It was right there.
With the VIN I already knew his key setup before I left the house. 4D62 chip, CWTWB1U811 remote head, NSN14 blade. I prepped the blank, grabbed the right pinning kit, and headed out.
Under the parking lot lights I cut the blade to code, built the remote head key, and used my programmer to write the 4D62 transponder through the OBD port. The immobilizer accepted it clean, no hiccups. Tested all four remote buttons, cycled the ignition twice, verified the security light dropped off the dash the way it should.
He drove home that night. The whole thing took maybe 35 minutes on site. A dealer would have meant a tow, a wait until morning, and a bill that looked a lot different than mine. The VIN is the single most useful piece of information you can give me when you call.
