2007 Subaru Outback Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A handyman flagged me down in the parking lot of that home improvement store off State Street, over in the San Roque neighborhood in Santa Barbara. His 2007 Outback had a key cut by another locksmith about eight days earlier. Worked fine for a week. Then it started refusing to crank in the evenings, even though mornings were no problem.
He thought the car had an electrical gremlin. It did not.
I pulled his key apart on the tailgate. The other locksmith had cloned the transponder using a 4D60 chip instead of a 4D62. On Subaru's immobilizer, a 4D60 can sometimes handshake just enough to pass initial registration, but the rolling encryption check drifts. That is why it worked for a few days and then started failing. The immobilizer light on the dash would blink, the starter would crank, and nothing else would happen. Classic wrong-chip behavior.
I programmed a fresh 4D62 using my VVDI2, cut the blade to code on site, and registered it to his immobilizer through the OBD port. His integrated remote, the NHVWB1U711, also had a weak battery making the lock and unlock range about two feet. Swapped that too.
He texted me about a month later to say it was still starting every time. The fix was just getting the right chip in there. That is the whole difference between a key that works and one that works for a week.
