A guy parked off Milpas near the Westside edge had been through two shops already. His 2007 Outback would crank fine, turn over strong, then just die. No warning lights that pointed anywhere useful. He'd already had the fuel system checked. Someone suggested the MAF sensor. He was getting close to authorizing a bigger diagnostic bill.

He found me through a neighbor and described the symptom. I asked one question: had anyone replaced a key recently. Turns out a locksmith had cut him a new key a few weeks before the problem started.

I got there and tested the key. It turned the cylinder, the engine cranked, and then it quit after about a second and a half. Classic immobilizer behavior. The key had been cut correctly to the blade profile but the transponder chip inside hadn't been registered to the vehicle. Whoever made it either skipped the programming step or didn't have the right equipment for this generation of Subaru security system.

I programmed a properly registered key on site. The car started and idled like nothing had ever been wrong.

He was relieved, then a little annoyed when he did the math on what the other shops had already charged him chasing a ghost problem. The dealer quote for a replacement key with programming was a number he'd written down and kept. What I charged was a fraction of that, and I came to him.
