Over near the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara, a barista flagged me down through a text that was mostly panic. She had a 2016 Outback Limited, bought used with one key, always planned to get a spare. Three years of planning and zero action.
Her only smart key cracked at the emergency blade pivot and snapped when she tried to open the driver door manually. Fob shell in one hand, blade stuck in the lock cylinder. Zero working keys.
I pulled the broken blade from the lock first. The transponder board inside the cracked HYQ14AHC housing was still intact, so I used my VVDI2 to clone the chip data rather than running a full all-keys-lost procedure through the OBD port. That saved real time because the AKL security handshake on these fifth-gen Outbacks has a timed countdown built into the immobilizer module.
Decoded the lock wafers from the extracted blade, cut two fresh keys, and rebuilt her fob into a new shell with the cloned chip seated correctly. Tested push-button start, all four remote buttons, and the passive entry on both front handles.
She went from zero keys to two in about 40 minutes. Just stood there holding both of them like she didn't trust it yet.
If your key breaks but you still have the pieces, bring them. Cloning a surviving chip is faster and cheaper than starting from scratch.
