On the Westside in Santa Barbara, a barista flagged me down through a text her roommate sent. She had bought her 2016 Outback used a few years back with one key, told herself she would get a spare cut eventually, and never did.
Then the blade pivot on that single fob cracked, and when she went to use it on the door lock manually, the blade snapped off inside the cylinder. Remote housing in one hand, blade tip stuck in the lock, zero working keys.

I extracted the broken blade from the cylinder, decoded the lock while I was in there, and cut the new blades to match. Both fobs programmed clean on the first pass and I walked every button plus the door handles before I packed up.
She went from zero keys to two working fobs in about 40 minutes, standing in her own driveway. She mentioned the dealer had already given her a number over the phone, and she went quiet when I told her what she owed me. Saved a good chunk, done before her shift started.
If your fob housing cracks or the blade snaps, hold onto every piece. The chip survives a lot, and that changes what the job costs.
