Over near Shoreline Park in Santa Barbara, a third-shift worker called me around midnight. His only smart key for the 2018 Outback had stopped communicating entirely. The car was sitting in the gravel alley behind his duplex, push-to-start, no response from any button on the fob. Got there in about 30 minutes. Plugged my Smart Pro into the OBD-II port under the dash and ran the Subaru AKL procedure for the fifth-generation Outback. His system uses the Denso immobilizer ECU tied to the body integrated unit, so the tool has to cycle through the security handshake before it will accept a new HYQ14AHK fob. Programmed the proximity functions, cut a fresh emergency insert blade, and tested every button plus the passive entry on all four door handles.
The whole job took maybe 40 minutes. Most of that was the security timer counting down while we stood there in the dark talking about his factory schedule.
He kept looking at the dash like the car was going to change its mind again.
