Out on the Eastside, a guy texted me around 11 at night. Third shift. He needed to be somewhere by midnight and his 2018 Outback was sitting dead in the gravel alley behind his duplex. The fob had been acting up for a week, and then it just stopped. Push the start button, nothing. The dash threw a key-not-detected warning and that was the end of it.
He had already called a tow company. They quoted him a wait time that would have blown his whole night.

When I got there, the alley was dark and quiet. I pulled up behind the Outback, set up on the tailgate of my van, and connected to the OBD port. The factory fob with its four-button layout was completely unresponsive. I ran the all-keys-lost procedure through my diagnostic equipment, registered a new fob, cut the emergency blade insert to match the vehicle, and verified every button and the push-to-start function before I packed up.
The whole thing was done in the alley, under a work light, in about 40 minutes. He made his shift.
He had assumed a tow plus a dealer visit was the only path. It wasn't. For the 2018 Outback, all-keys-lost is a job I do on-site regularly. I'll always tell you upfront if a vehicle is one of the exceptions where I can't help you. This one was not.
