2005 Subaru Outback
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you erase lost or stolen keys from my 2005 Outback so they won't start the car anymore?

Yes. The all-keys-lost procedure wipes the immobilizer's registered key list and rebuilds it from scratch using only the keys physically present during that session. Anything not in your hand during programming -- lost keys, stolen keys, keys you gave someone and want back -- gets erased and will no longer start the vehicle. This is one of the more common reasons people call me beyond just needing a spare.

Q: My 2005 Outback has a transponder key -- does it have any kind of backup or emergency feature built in?

Not in the fob sense, because this key has no fob. It's a single metal key with a transponder chip molded into the plastic head. There's no hidden blade to slide out, no separate emergency insert. What that means practically: if the key is lost, you need a replacement cut and programmed. If the plastic head cracks and the chip gets damaged, the car may crank but not start.

Q: I bought a transponder key blank online for my 2005 Outback. Can you just program it, or do I need a specific blank?

This one matters. The blank has to be correct for two things: the blade cut and the transponder chip type. A lot of generic blanks sold online have the wrong chip generation for this application, and no amount of programming will make a mismatched chip register to the car's immobilizer. If the blank is wrong, we hit a wall. If you already bought one, bring it. I'll tell you immediately whether it's usable.

Q: The plastic head on my 2005 Outback key is cracked and falling apart. Is the key still usable, or do I need a full replacement?

Depends on whether the chip inside got damaged. The transponder chip sits in the plastic head, not the blade. A cracked head doesn't automatically mean the chip is dead -- plenty of owners tape the head together and keep going. But if the crack reached the chip or the key is starting the car inconsistently, that's the chip telling you it's on its way out.

2005 Subaru Outback Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Upper State Street in Santa Barbara has a stretch of small business lots, and that's where I parked behind a record shop on a Tuesday afternoon. The owner had a 2005 Outback sitting right out front, and he needed a spare cut and programmed.

He'd already been to one hardware store. The blade they cut looked close enough, but the blank they used wasn't right for the transponder, and the car just sat there cranking.

He wasn't angry about it. He was just tired of explanations that didn't lead anywhere.

I pulled the correct blank from the van, cut it to his existing working key, and programmed the transponder to the car on site. No tow, no waiting room, no appointment three days out. He tested it himself twice before I packed up -- turned it off, walked away, came back, started it cold.

He asked whether I'd used an OEM blank or aftermarket. Honest answer: aftermarket, but sourced from a supplier I've tested across a lot of Subaru jobs. Same chip generation, correct blank for this application. The Subaru logo isn't on it. Everything else works identically.

The dealer comparison came up in passing. He'd called them. What they quoted him, plus the tow, plus the wait, was a significant number. He said "fraction of that" when we settled up, and he meant it.

Subaru Outback Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2005 Subaru Outback?▼

Call a mobile locksmith who works on Subaru vehicles before you call the dealer. All-keys-lost on this generation requires resetting the immobilizer and registering new transponder keys on site. Dealer quotes for this job can land well above what a locksmith charges, and that's before you factor in towing and waiting days for an appointment.
