2005 Subaru Outback Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A record store owner in Santa Barbara, over in the Riviera neighborhood, flagged me down in his shop parking lot. He had a 2005 Subaru Outback and wanted a spare key for daily carry, not a junk drawer backup. His exact question was whether an aftermarket key would be "as good as dealer."
Fair question. It deserves an honest answer.
His existing key was the standard remote head style for the third-generation Outback, a DAT17 blade with a 4D62 transponder chip and a three-button remote built into the head. The aftermarket blank I carry uses the same blade profile, same chip type, same button layout, same circuit board footprint. I have run this blank across hundreds of Subaru jobs.
I cut the blade on my mobile machine, programmed the 4D62 chip to his immobilizer through the OBD port using the Subaru SSM protocol, and tested the remote lock, unlock, and trunk buttons. Same snap-together fit. Same weight in the hand. Same button feel. The only difference is no Subaru star logo stamped on the back.
He turned the key over a couple times, clicked the lock button, heard the chirp, and just nodded. No ceremony.
Where aftermarket goes wrong is cheap blanks with thin plastic that cracks within weeks. I test every batch before it goes in the van. His key will hold up the same as OEM, for a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
