Down near Waterfront/Stearns Wharf, on a weekday afternoon when the lot was filling up with people headed toward the pier, I got a call from a guy parked near the water in a 2015 Subaru Outback. He'd gotten a key-not-detected warning on the dash and the push-button start wasn't responding. He was calm about it, the way people get when they've already spent twenty minutes trying everything they can think of.
He'd already swapped the CR2032. The battery was fresh, seated correctly, and it still wasn't communicating. He'd tried holding the fob directly against the start button, which sometimes helps when the battery is low but wasn't the issue here. He figured he was looking at a new fob and a dealer appointment.
I pulled up, ran the diagnostic check through the OBD port, and found the fob had dropped out of the vehicle's memory. Not a dead fob, not a broken antenna, just a registration that had gone away. On the 2015 Outback, that registration lives in the immobilizer control side of the system, and once a fob loses its pairing you can't recover it through any onboard trick. You need the right software talking to the right module.
I re-registered his existing fob on site. Tested push-button start, tested door handle touch unlock on both sides, tested lock, unlock, and the other two buttons. Everything came back clean. He didn't need a new key at all.
He asked what the dealer would have charged. Honestly, just the diagnostic visit alone would have eaten time he didn't have, and they likely would have started from "you need a new fob." He saved a good chunk, and more importantly he wasn't waiting two days for a parts order.
