Over near the Karpeles Manuscript Library in Santa Barbara, a guy on a road trip had his 2015 Outback key blade snap clean inside the ignition slot. The break was flush. You could barely see the stub poking out.
He had already called another locksmith who told him the cylinder needed to be drilled out. New cylinder, new key, new headache.
I drove out and got my HO01 Lishi into the keyway alongside the broken fragment. Extracted it without touching the wafer surfaces. Once the piece was out, I decoded the lock right there by reading each wafer position for the exact cut depths. His Outback uses the HYQ14AHC smart fob with a separate emergency insert blade, part number 57497-AL00A. I cut the new blade on my mobile machine from the decode, then paired the replacement through the OBD port using Subaru's security access protocol through NASTF.
No drilling. No cylinder swap. The ignition looked the same as before.
He stood there holding the two halves of his old blade like he was going to glue them together out of principle. I told him to keep them as a souvenir.
The whole thing took less than an hour on site, and he paid a fraction of what the other guy's drill-and-replace plan would have cost.
