Got called out to the Mesa neighborhood in Santa Barbara for a 2004 Outback that would crank and then immediately cut out. The owner told me another locksmith had already been there, charged him full price for a new key, and left when it did not work. Said the immobilizer module was bad.
The module was not bad. I have seen this before on these second-gen Outbacks. Subaru's 4D-62 transponder registration has a timed security handshake through the immobilizer ECU. If you rush it or interrupt the sequence, the key data writes to temporary memory but never commits. The car sees a key, starts the crank, then the IMMO kills fuel delivery about two seconds in. Classic incomplete learn.
I used my DAT17 Lishi to verify the blade cuts matched the door, then connected through OBD-II with the IM608. Cleared the old failed key data, started a clean IMMO registration with the full security timer, and let it count down without touching anything. Once the system confirmed a permanent write, I tested start, restart, and all four buttons on his NHVWB1U711 remote. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Everything clean.
He stood there watching the confirmation screen like he was waiting for it to fail again. It did not.
He had already paid someone else for a job that was never finished. I just made sure this one was.
