I got a call from a guy in the Samarkand neighborhood of Santa Barbara, parked behind his duplex off one of those narrow residential streets. Third shift.

He was due at work in a few hours and his only key had stopped working. Not lost, just dead to the car. Doors wouldn't respond to the fob, and he wasn't sure if the car would even start. He'd already looked up towing and was mentally budgeting for a dealer visit he couldn't afford to wait on.

I told him to stay put.

When I got there he had the key in his hand looking at it like it had personally let him down. I checked the battery first out of habit. CR2032, but it was the original from when the car was new, sitting loose in a slightly sprung tray. Classic. Swapped it, reseated the cover, and the doors responded immediately.

But the immobilizer had also tripped. The car had seen too many failed attempts and wasn't happy. I connected to the OBD port, ran the add-a-key procedure for the 2011 Outback, and got his existing key enrolled properly. Took about twenty minutes start to finish, most of it in the dark with a work light propped against the wheel well.

He made his shift. The dealer conversation never happened.
