2024 Subaru Outback Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a guy parked at a lookout near the Poinsettia neighborhood in Ventura. Road trip, scenic stop, bad timing. He'd gone to start his 2024 Subaru Outback and the key blade had snapped inside the ignition cylinder. Clean break, half the blade in his hand, the other half seated in the barrel.
He'd already called another locksmith. That guy told him the cylinder would need to be drilled out. New cylinder, rekey, the whole thing. The quote was pushing well past what any reasonable person wants to hear on vacation.
I drove out with a Lishi tool designed for that lock profile and got to work extracting the broken fragment without touching the wafer surfaces. No drilling. No damage to the cylinder. Once it was out, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position directly, which gave me the exact cut depths for a new blade.
Cut the replacement on site, verified fitment, tested the ignition. The cylinder looked exactly the way it did before the break.
His fob was still working fine the whole time. The remote functions were never the problem. When I left, the car was ready to drive, the lock was intact, and he hadn't paid for a single part he didn't need.
Destructive entry is a last resort. Anyone telling you otherwise on a fresh cylinder is either unprepared or not thinking about your options.
