Got a call from a guy out near Point Mugu State Park in Oxnard. He was hiking with his dog, came back to his 1999 Subaru Outback, and his key snapped right at the bow trying to turn the ignition. Half the blade stayed inside the cylinder.

I drove out, pulled the broken blade fragment from the ignition with an extractor, and inspected the wafers. They were worn but still functional, no binding, no dead spots. The cylinder was fine. Cut a fresh NSN11 key on site using the code from the lock, tested it in the ignition, both doors, and the rear hatch. Smooth turns across all four.

He kept looking at the broken half like he was mad at it. I told him the brass on these old Subaru keys gets brittle after twenty-plus years, especially if the ring puts lateral pressure on the bow. Handed him two fresh copies so he could keep a spare somewhere that was not his pocket.

Whole thing took maybe twenty minutes. No tow truck, no cylinder swap, no dealer visit.
