The Funk Zone in Santa Barbara is usually wine tasting and weekend crowds. This was a Tuesday, midday, and a guy was standing next to his 2019 Outback in a lot off Yanonali looking at his phone like it had personally wronged him.
He'd been in town for a long weekend, left the fob on a table at one of the tasting rooms, realized it was gone, went back, and it wasn't there anymore. He had nothing. No second key back home, no spare, no valet key sitting in a junk drawer. Just a push-button start car that wouldn't wake up and no way to get back to his place to feed his dog.
All-keys-lost on a push-button Outback is one of those jobs that looks like a wall from the outside. There's no ignition cylinder to fall back on, no physical turn-key trick that bypasses anything. The vehicle needs to detect a registered fob before it does much of anything, and with zero keys in the system, that process starts from scratch.
I pulled up to the lot with the equipment. The job runs through the OBD port, but it's not a quick plug-and-play. The immobilizer needs its existing key data cleared before a new fob can be written in, and that clearance process has a timed sequence built into it. You wait it out. That's just how it works.
Once the timing ran through, I wrote the new fob to the system, cut the emergency blade, and walked every function. Touch the handle, watch the car respond. Hit the start button, listen to the engine. Run through the other buttons. Everything behaved the first time.
He asked if the dealer could have done the same thing same-day. Probably not without scheduling it as a tow-in and waiting for a parts order. He'd already looked into it and the quote was enough to make him feel sick. We wrapped up in the lot for a fraction of what they wanted, and he made it home to the dog.
