A handyman over near Hummingbird Trailhead in Simi Valley called me about his 2000 Outback. Another locksmith had cut him a key about eight days earlier, and it was starting to act up. Mornings it would fire right up. By evening the engine would crank but refuse to catch, the security light on the dash blinking at him like a warning.
He thought the car had an electrical problem. It didn't.
I pulled the key he'd been using and read the transponder with my VVDI2. The chip inside was a 4D60 instead of the 4D62 that his Outback's immobilizer actually needs. Close enough to pass a shallow handshake, wrong enough to fail the deeper validation that Subaru's system runs periodically. That is the thing about a close-but-wrong chip. It can work just long enough to make you trust it.
Cut a new blade from code, programmed a fresh 4D62 through the OBD-II port, and paired it to the immobilizer ECU. While I had everything open I popped the back off his NHVWB1U711 remote and swapped in a new CR2025, because the old one was reading low and his lock and unlock range had shrunk to about four feet.
He stood there watching the Outback start five times in a row, like he was waiting for it to quit again. It didn't. The difference between a key that works and one that almost works is one digit in a chip number.
