A guy parked near one of the shops off Tapo Canyon had been dealing with his 2000 Outback remote for a couple months before he called me. The fob would lock the car fine in the morning and then just stop responding by afternoon. Not every day, just enough to drive him sideways. He figured it was the battery and had already swapped it twice.
When I got there in Old Town Simi he handed me the fob and I could tell right away it had been pried open before, probably when one of those batteries got swapped. The housing was slightly warped and the back clip wasn't seating all the way. That gap was letting the battery float just enough to drop contact under vibration.
I opened it clean, checked the board, found light oxidation on one of the battery terminals, cleaned the contact points, reseated a fresh CR2025, and got the housing closed the right way. Walked every button. Lock, unlock, and the other two. All of them working clean at range.
He asked about the dealer. I told him what I charged. He laughed.
It wasn't a programming job. It wasn't a new fob. It was a few minutes of doing the job right instead of just swapping a battery and hoping.
