Got a call from a guy out near Seaside Park in Ventura. He had a 1996 Land Cruiser, FZJ80, parked along the street. Said he locked the keys inside after unloading beach gear from the back and swinging the driver door shut without thinking. The 80 Series Land Cruiser uses a standard Toyota sidebar wafer lock, so once I had access, I decoded the lock and cut him a fresh mechanical key right there on my mobile unit. No chip to program, no computer to hook up. The FZJ80 predates Toyota's transponder immobilizer system by a year, so a properly cut key is all you need.
He watched me cut it, tried it in the door, tried it in the ignition, and the 1FZ-FE fired right up. Then he just stood there holding both keys like he was afraid to let go of either one.
Whole thing took less time than he spent on hold with the dealership. His truck never moved from the spot he parked it in.
