The tire shop in Mira Monte called me on a Tuesday afternoon. A Land Cruiser was sitting in their lot, and their customer needed a key made. Another locksmith had already been out, tried to program a replacement smart fob, got errors partway through, and left. The car would not accept any key attempt after that. Dead in the lot.
When a programming attempt fails mid-sequence on this system, the immobilizer can lock itself into a fault state. It stops talking over the OBD port. Standard tools get nothing back. That is probably why the first guy packed up.
I brought bench equipment that can interface with the security module directly when the OBD path is blocked. I pulled the module, read the stored data off the chip, cleared the fault condition, and rebuilt the key registration from a clean state. Once the reset was confirmed, I registered the new smart fob and verified it on the first attempt.
Then I did what I always do: walked every function. Touch unlock on both front handles, the lock button on the handles, the start button, and every button on the fob. Everything behaved.
The customer had already been quoted a flatbed tow to the dealer, a probable multi-day turnaround, and a bill that would have hurt. Instead, the car left the tire shop under its own power that same afternoon. That part never gets old.
