Out in Santa Paula, East Area 2, a call came in just before 5:30 in the morning. Guy was at a supply store, crew already loading up, and his Land Cruiser would not respond to the key. Not just the remote. The engine would not start either. He said it had been acting up the night before but he figured it would sort itself out by morning. It did not.

The CR2016 inside was not just weak, it had a faint white crust on one terminal. That kind of corrosion sits between the battery and the contact point and breaks the circuit even when the battery still has voltage.
I cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh CR2016, tested the remote lock and unlock. Solid. Then I connected through the OBD port to confirm the transponder was reading clean and no fault had been stored from the repeated failed start attempts. It was reading fine once the battery contact was good again. The key had not lost its pairing, it just had a dead connection feeding it.
He was loaded and moving before 6:15. The dealer conversation never came up because there was no reason for it. Sometimes the job is just knowing where to look first.
