2005 Toyota Land Cruiser Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a tire shop in Downtown Santa Paula. They had a 2005 Land Cruiser sitting in their bay, owner standing next to it, and another locksmith already gone. The first locksmith had tried to program a replacement remote head key, something went sideways during the process, and the car would not start. The shop called me because they needed the bay back.
When I got there, the owner walked me through what happened. The other locksmith had made a couple of attempts, got errors, and left without resolving anything. The vehicle's immobilizer had seen enough bad attempts that it was no longer communicating cleanly over the OBD port. That is the scenario most locksmiths do not have an answer for.
I pulled the relevant module and went to bench. Reading the security data directly off the chip, outside of the OBD communication path, let me see exactly what state the system was in. There was a fault logged from the previous failed attempts. I cleared it, rebuilt the key registration from scratch, and programmed the correct replacement fob -- the factory FCC ID on this vehicle is on a 3-button remote head key running a CR2016.
First clean attempt after the reset, the system accepted it. Car started. I walked every button on the fob before I packed up, because I have seen cases where the remote functions register fine but one button has a contact issue from a key that sat wrong in someone's pocket for years.
About 90 minutes total. The owner had already gotten a dealer quote before the tire shop called the first locksmith. My number was a fraction of what the dealer wanted, and the dealer would have needed the car for multiple days. He was back on the road the same afternoon.
