Out in the Mira Monte area of Ojai, a guy flagged me down on a Land Cruiser job that started as a dead battery complaint and turned into something else.
He had already swapped the CR2032 in his HYQ14FBA fob. Range came back for a day, then dropped again. Touch unlock on the driver handle stopped responding. Passenger side still worked. Start button still saw the fob if he held it right against the dash. He figured the whole key was dying.
I pulled the fob apart on his tailgate. The battery was fine. But the board, the 281451-2110, had a hairline crack running along one of the antenna traces near the edge. Looked like the fob had been dropped on concrete at some point and the case took the hit without showing much outside damage. The signal was bleeding out intermittently.
I had a replacement HYQ14FBA in my kit. Programmed it through the OBD-II port using the Toyota-specific 8A protocol, cut a new emergency insert blade to match, and registered it to his immobilizer ECU. Then I walked every door handle, tested the hatch button, cycled the lock and unlock, and ran three cold starts.
He watched the whole thing from about two feet away. When the driver handle responded to his touch on the first try, he just nodded slowly like he had been holding his breath for a week.
Done on site, saved him a good chunk over what the dealer quoted.
