I was heading back through Matilija when the call came in. It was just after 8pm.

She was in a hospital parking lot with her kid -- recently discharged, tired, ready to be home. She pressed the fob button. Nothing. She'd heard somewhere that you could hold the fob against the start button as a backup if the battery died, so she tried that too. Still nothing. The dealer's service line rang to voicemail. She found me.

I talked her through the emergency blade while I was already moving. The blade got her into the car so the kid wasn't standing outside. When I arrived, I opened the fob on the hood and found what I'd half expected: the CR1632 had been sitting in there long enough that the contact surface had corroded, and the battery itself had dropped low enough that even the backup antenna read was failing. On these smart key systems, that backup coupling requires the fob to have enough charge to respond. Corroded contacts kill that even if the cell isn't fully dead.

New fob, programmed through the diagnostic port, emergency blade cut to match. Walked every door for touch unlock, tested the start, confirmed the old fob was cleared from the system so it couldn't be used if it turned up somewhere.

Engine running, kid in the seat, about 45 minutes from her first call. She paid a fraction of what the dealer would have quoted her in the morning -- if she'd even been willing to wait until morning. She wasn't.

That's usually how these calls go. The situation is never really about the key.
