Got a call around 8pm from a woman in the Blanchard Community area of Santa Paula. She was at the hospital parking lot. Her kid had just been discharged and she needed to get home. Her 2003 Toyota Land Cruiser would not respond to the key at all. Dead remote buttons, and even holding the key near the steering column was not getting a read from the immobilizer.
She had already tried the dealer. Closed for the night.
I got out there and opened the door manually. Once I had my IM608 II on the OBD-II port, I pulled up the immobilizer module and read the system. Her HYQ12BBT remote head key had a corroded CR2016 contact inside, and the corrosion had gotten bad enough that it was affecting the board near the transponder coil area too. The 4D-67 chip was not registering cleanly.
Replaced the full key. Cut the blade to match, registered the new 4D-67 transponder through the IM608, programmed the remote side, and walked every button. Lock, unlock, panic. Then engine start, three cycles. Solid.
From her phone call to engine running was about 45 minutes. She put her kid in the car seat, pulled the medicine bag off her shoulder, and just sat in the driver's seat for a second before she turned the key. Did not say anything. Did not need to.
That is the whole job sometimes. Just get someone home.
