2013 Toyota Land Cruiser
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you delete lost or stolen fobs from my Land Cruiser so they can't start it anymore?

Yes. When new keys are registered to the vehicle, the old registered fobs get erased from the system. They won't start the car. If your keys were stolen rather than just misplaced, this matters a lot, and it's handled as part of the programming process rather than a separate step. You leave with only your new keys on the system.

Q: Does my 2013 Land Cruiser smart key have a hidden emergency blade inside it?

It does. There's a small release tab on the fob -- press it and the metal blade slides out. That blade works in the driver's door cylinder to get you in manually when the fob battery is dead. Once you're inside, you're not stuck either. Hold the fob body directly against the start button and press the brake pedal. The vehicle can read the fob at close range even with a dead battery.

Q: My door handle touch-unlock stopped working but the start button still sees the fob. Is the smart key failing?

Almost certainly not. On the 2013 Land Cruiser, the capacitive touch sensors in the door handles are independent from the start function. If push-to-start still works and the fob is being detected normally, the key itself is fine. This complaint shows up regularly on Land Cruiser forums and the culprit is almost always on the door side -- dirt or moisture in the handle sensor area, a degraded sensor, or wiring at that door.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2013 Land Cruiser. Can I program it myself?

No. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that registers a new smart key on this vehicle. Programming requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port to run the security registration sequence. The fob you bought online is likely a valid starting point -- just means you still need a tech with the right tools to pair it to your specific vehicle before it does anything.

2013 Toyota Land Cruiser Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked near the Oak View end of Ojai. He had a 2013 Land Cruiser and a bad experience sitting heavy on him before he even said hello.

He'd already been burned. Searched for a locksmith when his smart key started acting up, clicked the first sponsored result, and the tech who showed up quoted one number on the phone and a very different number once he was standing at the door. The work was sloppy, the fob came back only half functional, and the engine start was intermittent. He paid a lot and still had a broken key.

By the time he found EZ Car Keyz through Google Guaranteed, he wasn't looking for a deal. He was looking for someone he could verify before they showed up. I gave him my BSIS license number on the spot -- that's California's Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, license LCO#6792. Background-checked, insured, registered. He looked it up while we were still on the phone, which is exactly what I want people to do.

When I pulled up, I went through the whole fob: battery, contacts, blade housing, button response. Then I connected my programmer to the OBD port, ran the smart key registration sequence with the full security handshake, and tested every function -- door handles, start button, the blade in the door cylinder.

Everything worked. He'd been driving a Land Cruiser that should have been humming along, and instead he'd spent weeks dealing with the fallout from someone who didn't know what they were doing.

The dealer had quoted him considerably more for the same job. I was a fraction of that. But honestly, the number wasn't the point by then. He just wanted it done right, documented, and on camera if needed. That's what I do.

Toyota Land Cruiser Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2013 Land Cruiser?▼

Call a mobile locksmith who works Toyota smart key systems, not the dealer. All-keys-lost on the 2013 Land Cruiser means the existing key memory gets wiped and new fobs are registered from scratch through the diagnostic port -- it's a timed process with a countdown built into the security sequence, so it takes longer than a standard spare-key add.
