It was a Friday night in Isla Vista, and I was already finishing a call nearby when the text came in. A couple had walked out of a venue in Goleta and their 2009 Land Cruiser would not respond to the fob at all. Both keys dead. They were leaning toward just leaving it and dealing with it over the weekend.
That is the part that always gets me. The plan was to walk away from a vehicle in a lot overnight because they assumed the fix would take days. I told them I was 15 minutes out.
When I pulled up, they handed me both fobs. The battery in the primary was completely spent, and the backup was close behind it. The fob housing on one had been pried at the seam with something flat, which bent the battery contact just enough to lose a solid connection. Classic. Fresh CR1632 in both, contact on the bent one coaxed back into position, and I walked every function: touch unlock on both front handles, the lock button, and every other button on the fob. Then I had them run the start button themselves so they could feel it respond correctly.
No parts order. No tow. No waiting until Monday to call the dealer and schedule a drop-off. They drove home the same night.
The dealer conversation came up only because they mentioned it. The number they had been quoted for a replacement fob plus programming at the dealership was more than they wanted to think about on a Friday. What we actually needed was a battery and two minutes with the housing. Fraction of that, done on site.
