A Land Cruiser owner near the Carpinteria Valley Museum called after his HYQ14FBB smart key died mid-trip. He'd already been to another locksmith who charged him full price for a key that never worked right. Engine would crank, run for two seconds, then cut fuel. Classic incomplete registration.
I checked his failed key with my IM608. The other guy had skipped Toyota's seed-key exchange in the immobilizer. Without that handshake, the key writes to temporary memory but never commits to the ID Code Box's permanent storage.
Started fresh. Connected through OBD2, cleared the botched registration, ran the full 16-minute immobilizer reset. The 2021 Land Cruiser requires you to calculate the security seed using the ECM's challenge code. Miss that step and you get exactly what he had: a key that looks programmed but isn't.
Once the seed calculation completed, I registered his new HYQ14FBB properly. Cut the emergency blade on my Condor XC-Mini using the TOY43 profile. Tested all four buttons, checked the smart entry on both front doors, verified the power liftgate button worked.
The IM608 screen showed "Key Registration Complete" with his key's ID stored in slot 1. That's the confirmation that matters. Not just programmed, but permanently written. He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted, and this time it actually worked.
