Out in East Simi Valley, I got a call from a guy standing next to his 1996 Pathfinder in his carport.
He had his key in his hand, which sounds like a good situation, but the bow had snapped off at the neck and he was holding the blade separate from the rest of it. He'd been using a pair of pliers to turn the ignition for about a week before it finally fell apart completely.
He told me he bought the truck used years ago and it came with one key. He always figured he'd get a spare cut at a hardware store. He never did.
I looked at the blade. Still in decent shape, just separated. On a 1996 Pathfinder that's actually a fine starting point because the cut is right there, readable. I pulled out my gauge and decoded the cuts directly off the existing blade. Had a new key blank, cut it on the spot, tested it in the door lock and then the ignition. Turned clean both times.
The whole thing took maybe 20 minutes. He asked about the dealer almost as an afterthought, the way people do when the problem is already solved. I told him what I typically hear from owners on these older trucks. He nodded and said he should have called two years ago when the bow first started cracking.
He got two keys cut. That part I pushed a little. On a vehicle this age with no backup, one key is still a bad day waiting to happen.
