Got a call from a guy over on the Collins Drive corridor in Moorpark. His 2017 Pathfinder had been acting up for weeks. Push the start button, nothing. Dashboard would flash "I-KEY SYSTEM ERROR," then go dark. Sometimes it would catch on the second try, sometimes the fifth.
He told me he had already replaced the CR2032 twice. Bought the batteries from two different stores thinking he got a dud the first time. Same behavior.
When I got there, I pulled up his NATS6 data through the OBD port using my diagnostic tool. The immobilizer was seeing the key, then dropping it mid-handshake. Opened up his KR5S180144014 fob on the hood and found the issue right away. The battery contact leaf on the board had a hairline crack in the solder joint. Every bump, every pocket ride, and the connection would cut in and out. The transponder side was fine. The Hitag AES chip was healthy.
I resoldered the contact, seated a fresh CR2032, and cleared the stored error codes from the BCM. Then I tested what matters: start button from every seat position, lock and unlock from 30 feet, both front door handle sensors, the hatch release, and the panic button.
He stood there watching the door handles work on the first touch and just said, "That's it?"
That's it. No new fob, no dealer trip, no tow. Just a cold solder joint and 40 minutes on site.
