2002 Nissan Pathfinder
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Is a locksmith cheaper than the Nissan dealer for a 2002 Pathfinder key?

Almost always, yes. Dealers bill key work in pieces: the blank, the cut, and programming as its own labor charge. On a vehicle this age, that adds up to a number that surprises most people. We carry the right key blanks and the diagnostic equipment to program the transponder correctly, same result, done at your location, without the overhead. Most owners who've called around save a good chunk going with a mobile locksmith over the dealer route.

Q: Does your price include cutting and programming?

Yes. Everything is one price. The key blank, cutting it to your vehicle, programming the transponder so the immobilizer accepts it, and testing before I leave. Nothing gets added after the fact. Dealers on these older Nissans will sometimes quote the key, then add the cut, then bill programming as a separate hour of shop labor. By the time the invoice prints, it looks nothing like the number they started with.

Q: My 2002 Pathfinder starts fine but I got a new key cut and it cranks without starting. What is going on?

That is almost always a transponder issue. On the 2002 Pathfinder, the key blade can be cut perfectly and the car will still crank without catching if the transponder chip was not programmed into the immobilizer's memory. The ignition cylinder reads the blade and lets the starter turn, but the immobilizer reads the transponder chip separately and cuts fuel or spark if it does not recognize it.

Q: I have two working keys for my 2002 Pathfinder and I want to add a third. Do I need to bring the ones I already have?

Yes, bring every key you have. The immobilizer on this generation of Pathfinder rewrites the entire registered key list during each programming session. It does not just add a key to the existing list. If you hand me one key and I program the new one, your other key gets erased. All keys present at the time of programming get enrolled. Any key not present gets wiped.

2002 Nissan Pathfinder Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out near Hobson Park, a guy called me about a 2002 Pathfinder with a broken key. Not lost, broken. The blade had snapped clean at the shoulder, and the stub was sitting inside the ignition cylinder. He'd already called another locksmith who looked at it over the phone and told him the cylinder would need to be drilled out and replaced. New cylinder, new keys, the whole thing.

He wasn't happy about that number, so he called me for a second opinion.

I got there with my extraction tools and a Lishi pick for Nissan. The fragment came out without touching the wafer surfaces. No scratches, no damage, cylinder fully intact. Once the broken piece was out, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position directly. That gave me the exact cut I needed.

I cut a new transponder key blank to match the decode, then programmed the transponder through the OBD port. Because the 2002 Pathfinder wipes the key list on every programming session, I made sure to have him hand me both of his surviving spare keys so all three got enrolled in the same session. Nothing left behind, nothing accidentally erased.

The original cylinder worked with the new key exactly like it did before it broke. He didn't need a new ignition assembly. He didn't need a new lock. He needed someone willing to do the job right instead of the fast way.

The dealer comparison didn't even come up. He already knew what drilling would have cost him.

Nissan Pathfinder Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder key replacement cost?▼

Call us for the exact number, but the short version is it costs a fraction of what the dealer charges. Our price covers the key blank, cutting it to your vehicle, programming the transponder, and mobile service to your location in Oxnard. One price, nothing added at the end. Nissan dealers typically break this into separate line items: the key blank, a cutting fee, and programming billed as a labor hour. Those three charges stack up fast.
