1998 Nissan Pathfinder
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 1998 Nissan Pathfinder actually use?

A metal key cut to the vehicle. That's it. This generation of Pathfinder doesn't use a fob or a transponder chip as part of starting the car. You insert the key, it turns the cylinder, the engine starts. Replacement means cutting a new blade to match your locks. We can do that from a working key, from your key code if you have it, or by decoding one of the locks directly.

Q: How does a locksmith compare to the dealer for this one?

On a 1998 Pathfinder with a mechanical key, the dealer doesn't have much of an advantage. They're cutting the same key blade you can get from a locksmith, hardware store, or key kiosk. The difference is a mobile locksmith comes to you, can decode your lock if you're stuck without a key, and typically runs well below what a dealership service department charges for the same cut. Call us for the number.

Q: I lost my only key and the Pathfinder is locked. Can you still make a key without towing it?

Yes, that's a standard call for me. On a 1998 Pathfinder, I can pick or decode the door lock to gain entry, then decode the lock cylinder to determine the correct key cut. No tow, no dealer trip. I come to you in Simi Valley, get the door open, and cut the key on site. The whole job usually wraps up faster than arranging a tow would.

Q: My Pathfinder key turns hard or feels sloppy in the ignition. Is that a key problem or a cylinder problem?

Usually the cylinder. These ignition cylinders are getting old, and the tumblers wear down with use. A worn cylinder can make even a correct key feel stiff, sticky, or imprecise. Sometimes a fresh-cut key on a worn cylinder feels worse than the original because the original wore alongside it. If the key turns fine in the door lock but fights the ignition, the ignition cylinder is worth a closer look.

1998 Nissan Pathfinder Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Bridle Path called me on a Saturday morning. His 1998 Pathfinder had been sitting in the driveway for two days because his only key snapped, and the bow end was still stuck in the ignition. He had already called a dealer, who told him the car needed to come in before they could do anything.

It didn't need to come in anywhere.

I drove out to Simi Valley with my extraction tools, pulled the broken piece out of the cylinder without damaging it, and decoded the lock right there. Cut a new key on site, tested it in the ignition and both door locks, and he was driving before noon.

He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him I honestly didn't know their number, but he saved a good chunk by not having to tow it there first. The whole thing took less than an hour in his driveway.

That's most of what I do on these older trucks. No modules, no laptops. Just the lock, the blade, and the cut.

Nissan Pathfinder Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why does a 1998 Pathfinder key replacement cost anything at all if it's just metal?▼

Fair question. The key itself is inexpensive. What you're paying for is the skill to cut it accurately, especially if you don't have a working key to duplicate. If yours is lost and we're working from the lock, I decode the cylinder, determine the correct cut depths, and produce a key that works first try. A bad cut can feel like it almost works, and owners sometimes wear a cylinder out further trying to make a close-but-wrong key turn.
