Got a call one evening from a couple at The Collection at RiverPark in Oxnard. They had been shopping, came back to their 2014 Pathfinder in the lot, and the push button just flashed amber and did nothing. No crank, no dash greeting, nothing. I got there in about 40 minutes. Popped open their KR5S180144014 fob first. The CR2032 was swollen and reading 2.4 volts, well under the 3V these need to talk to the BCM reliably. But here is the part that mattered: they only had one key. One bad battery away from a full all-keys-lost situation.
I swapped the cell, confirmed the original fob was alive again, then programmed a second smart key through OBD so they would never be one dead battery away from a really bad afternoon. Cut the emergency insert blade on my machine in the van, tested both fobs on every door handle, the hatch, and the start button.
They drove out of that lot with two working keys for a fraction of what the dealer quoted, same night, no tow.
