2006 Nissan Pathfinder Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy in Downtown Oxnard called me on a Tuesday morning. He was parked near the transit center, running late, and his 2006 Pathfinder would not start. The key turned, the engine cranked, and then it died. Cranked again, died again. He thought it was a fuel issue.
It wasn't.
That crank-and-stall pattern on these is the immobilizer doing its job. The key was turning fine mechanically, but the transponder inside the key head wasn't being read. He had bought a replacement key online a few months back when his original got worn down, had a hardware store cut the blade, and assumed that was the whole job. Nobody told him the chip inside still needed to be registered to the car.
I pulled up to him on the street, no tow needed. Got the new key registered through the OBD port, verified the immobilizer was reading it correctly, and tested the remote functions on top while I was at it. The CR1620 in the replacement fob was also nearly dead, so we swapped that out on the spot.
He had been about to call a tow truck to haul it to the dealer. The dealer would have taken two or three days minimum and charged him for diagnostics on top of the key work. He was back on the road in under an hour, parked on the same block where I found him.
The crank-and-stall thing shakes people up. It looks like the car is broken. It's almost always the key.
