A guy in Moorpark, over near the Tierra Rejada Open Space trailhead, called me on a Saturday because his 2015 Pathfinder would not start. Dash said "I-KEY SYSTEM ERROR" and the push button was dead.
He had already replaced the CR2032 himself. Twice. Both fresh cells from the same pack. Still nothing. He held the fob right against the start button like the manual says for a dead battery workaround. Nothing.
By the time he called me, he had already called the Nissan dealer. They told him to tow it in, leave it, and they would get to it Monday or Tuesday. He had his kid's baseball gear in the back seat and a game in two hours.
I pulled up, plugged my IM608 II into the OBD port under the dash, and pulled the BCM data off the 284B2 module. The existing key's ID was in the system but the immobilizer handshake was hanging. NATS6 does that sometimes on these R52 Pathfinders where the BCM drops the crypto sync. I ran the relearn procedure, re-registered his KR5S180144014, and then programmed a spare while I was already connected.
Start button worked. All five buttons on both fobs responded. He grabbed the baseball bag and left. The whole thing took about 30 minutes in the parking area.
He saved a good chunk over a dealer visit he would have had to wait days for anyway.
