2000 Toyota Sienna
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the transponder programming actually take at my car?

On a 2000 Sienna, cutting and programming a transponder key runs about 20 to 30 minutes at the vehicle. The immobilizer on this generation doesn't have a lengthy reset cycle the way newer systems do, so once the blade is cut and verified, the programming through the OBD port is the quick part. All-keys-lost takes a little longer because the immobilizer needs to be cleared before it can accept a new key, but it's still well under an hour.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer for a 2000 Sienna?

The programming itself takes the same amount of time regardless of who does it. What's different is everything around it. The dealer has a service lane queue, a parts counter, a repair order process, and a certified tech who's also working three other jobs. The actual hands-on work might be 20 minutes, but the visit easily runs two hours. With a mobile service, the tech doing the job is the only person involved.

Q: I bought a key blank online for my 2000 Sienna. Can you just program it?

Depends on what you bought. The 2000 Sienna takes a specific transponder key, and not every aftermarket blank on the market carries the right chip. Some blanks look identical and cut correctly but the transponder inside won't register with the immobilizer. Before you spend money on programming, bring the blank and I'll verify the chip is compatible. If it is, we move forward.

Q: My 2000 Sienna cranks but won't start. Could it be the transponder key?

Yes, and it's a classic symptom. Engine turns over, won't fire. No crank issues, battery is fine, but it just won't catch. On this generation, when the immobilizer doesn't recognize the key's transponder, it cuts fuel and the car cranks uselessly. A few things cause this: a cracked key head that damaged the chip, a key that was duplicated at a hardware store without copying the transponder, or a key that simply wore out internally over 20-plus years.

2000 Toyota Sienna Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already in the Juanamaria area of Ventura when the call came in. A doctor at a medical office building couldn't leave between patients, and her Toyota key had cracked at the bow. The blade was still attached, barely, but the transponder portion of the key head was compromised. She'd already tried wrapping it with tape. It started the car twice, then stopped cooperating entirely.

She'd called the dealer first. They wanted her to schedule an appointment, get the car towed in since she didn't have a working key, and come back to pick it up later. She had a waiting room full of patients and exactly one 20-minute break in her day.

I pulled into the parking structure during that break. Decoded the lock mechanically, cut a replacement blade to match, then programmed the transponder through the OBD port using my equipment. The immobilizer accepted the new key on the first cycle. I handed her two working keys before she walked back inside.

Her car never left its parking spot. The dealer comparison only came up because she mentioned what they'd quoted her. I kept my mouth shut and let the difference speak for itself.

Toyota Sienna Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a Toyota key after hours or on a weekend?▼

Most dealer service departments in this area shut down by five and go dark on Sundays. Lose your key on a Saturday night in the Juanamaria neighborhood and you're looking at a tow, a wait, and a Monday morning appointment at minimum. We run outside those hours. One call gets you scheduled, often the same evening or the next morning.
