It was just past 5:30 in the morning when the call came in. A guy was parked at a supply store off the Via Marina area of Oxnard, crew already loading, shift starting at 6. His Sienna would not start. He said the key turned fine but the engine cranked and died immediately, over and over.

On this generation Sienna, when the transponder chip fails to communicate with the immobilizer -- whether from a cracked key head, a broken wire in the bow, or just a chip that finally gave up -- you get exactly that: the engine fires for a second and cuts out. The ignition cylinder itself has no idea anything is wrong. The security system does.
I was in the lot in about 25 minutes. Got the door sorted, connected through the OBD port, and confirmed the original key's chip was no longer registering. Cut a new key blade to match his lock, programmed the replacement transponder to the vehicle, and tested it. Engine ran clean. Total hands-on time was right around 30 minutes.
He made his shift. The dealer option would have been a tow, a wait for the service bay to open, and most of a day's wages gone. That did not happen.
