2020 Toyota Sienna
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I have to tow my Sienna to the dealer if I have no working keys?

No. A mobile locksmith with the right tools and credentials can do the all-keys-lost job wherever the vehicle is sitting, whether that's your driveway off Arrellaga or a parking lot. Dealers tell you to tow because that's the only way their service lane works. It's not a technical requirement, it's a workflow requirement on their end. The 2020 Sienna smart key system does need professional diagnostic equipment and authorized security data access to complete the job correctly.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost job take on the 2020 Sienna?

On site, plan for about 45 minutes to an hour. The immobilizer reset on this system includes a timed cycle that runs when no registered fob is present, and that alone accounts for a chunk of the time. After that comes fob registration and a full button check. At the dealer it can stretch into a full day or more once you factor in scheduling, parts sourcing, and shop queue. The technical work isn't longer, the wait is.

Q: My 2020 Sienna sliding door buttons stopped working but the lock and unlock still work. Is the fob bad?

Not necessarily. On the 2020 Sienna, the sliding door button functions can drop out on their own without affecting the rest of the fob. Before assuming the fob needs to be replaced, check the CR2032 battery first. A low battery often kills the higher-draw functions, like sliding doors, before it affects basic lock and unlock. Swap in a fresh battery, make sure it's seated correctly with clean contacts, and retest all six buttons.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2020 Sienna. Can I program it myself?

No. There's no self-programming sequence for the 2020 Sienna smart key system. No button combo, no ignition cycle, nothing you can do in the driveway on your own. Professional diagnostic equipment is required to register the fob to the vehicle's immobilizer. The fob you bought online is fine to use as the hardware, but it still needs to be programmed by someone with the right tools. That's a common situation and a normal job.

2020 Toyota Sienna Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a Sienna owner parked near Micheltorena Street in the Upper East. She had one working fob left. The second one had gone missing a few weeks before, and she kept putting off the replacement. Then the remaining fob started acting up, door handles not responding on the first touch, and she decided not to wait any longer.

She had done her homework before calling. Checked the BSIS site, looked up the license number, read the reviews. Her last experience with a locksmith, years back on a different car, had left her with a receipt that had no company name and a phone number that stopped working shortly after. She wasn't going to do that again.

I pulled up in the service van, met her on the street. We went over the job: one fob to add, one already registered in the system, both need to be present at the same time. She had the original with her, so we were set.

The programming side went the way it usually does on these, a clean connection, proper security channel, no shortcuts. Afterward I walked every button on both fobs, checked the sliding doors, checked the start function, walked the door handles. Everything confirmed working before I packed up.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a number that made her pause. Coming to her was already the easier call. The price made it an easy one.

Toyota Sienna Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2020 Sienna. Can you still make a replacement?▼

Yes. All-keys-lost on the 2020 Sienna is something we handle on site. The job involves resetting the immobilizer through the diagnostic port, registering the new fob, and getting everything confirmed working before I leave. The reset cycle on these has a built-in timed countdown when no registered key is present, so the job takes a little longer than a simple spare, usually 45 minutes to an hour on site.
