Friday night in the Texas Tract neighborhood, Simi Valley. A couple came out from an event and their 2010 Toyota Sienna sat there doing nothing. Key in the ignition, turn it, engine cranks but won't fire. The immobilizer light on the dash, that little car-with-a-key icon, was blinking instead of going solid. Classic sign the transponder isn't being read.
They had two keys. Neither one would start it. They were about to leave the van in the lot and figure it out Monday.
I was fifteen minutes out with the right blank already stocked. TOY43 blade, 4D-67 chip, part number 89785-08020. When I got there I tried both their keys. One had a hairline crack in the bow right where the chip sits. The other key's chip read fine on my VVDI Key Tool but was losing signal at the ignition antenna coil, which told me the coil wasn't the problem, just marginal chip contact from wear.
Cut a fresh key to code, programmed the 4D-67 through the OBD port using an existing registered key for the add-key procedure. Took about twenty minutes. The van started on the first turn and the immobilizer light went solid like it should.
The husband just looked at his wife and said "so we're not stuck here." That was it. No drama. They drove home that night instead of spending a weekend sorting it out through the dealer.
