A tire shop over in the Oakridge Estates area of Simi Valley called me about a 2013 Toyota Sienna that another locksmith had already walked away from.
The story: owner brought the van in for tires, then realized he needed a spare key. The first locksmith tried an OBD programming session, got a communication error mid-write, and the smart ECU locked out. Now the van would not start at all. The original fob that worked fine an hour ago was dead to the system. Dashboard just sat there with a steady "Key not detected" message.
When the ID box (89990-08040) gets a botched write, OBD-based tools can't talk to it anymore. The module thinks it is mid-registration and refuses new commands. I brought my ACDP bench programmer for exactly this situation. Pulled the ID box from under the dash, read the security data off the 93C66 EEPROM on the board, cleared the fault state, and rebuilt the key registration from scratch.
His 6-button HYQ14ADR fob registered clean on the first attempt after the reset. Tested all proximity zones: both front door handles, the rear hatch, the start button. Everything responded.
About 90 minutes, start to finish. His other option was a flatbed to the dealer and a multi-day wait for the smart ECU to get reflashed. He drove home instead.
