A different locksmith had come out the week before, cut and programmed what was supposed to be a working key, took his money, and left. The engine would crank, catch for about two seconds, then die. The Sienna's immobilizer registration process has a timed security sequence with a seed-and-key calculation that the car has to validate before a new fob is permanently committed to memory. If you rush through that sequence or the tool loses sync during the timed window, the key writes to a temporary state. The car sees it well enough to crank, but the registration never fully commits, so fuel authorization drops out almost immediately. The car is not broken. The job just was not finished.

I connected through the OBD port, cleared the failed registration, and ran a full clean enrollment with the correct security sequence timed out properly. When it completed, the confirmation showed the fob permanently stored. He pressed the start button and it idled like nothing had ever been wrong.

He had already paid the first locksmith. That money was gone. What I could do was fix it on site, show him the tool screen with the confirmed registration, and not charge him anywhere near what the dealer would have asked for the same work.
