2021 Toyota Sienna
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you delete lost or stolen fobs from my Sienna so they can't start it anymore?

Yes. The immobilizer stores registered key IDs, and that list can be cleared and rebuilt during a programming session. When we add new keys to your Sienna, we wipe the existing registrations first, then enroll only the keys you have in hand. Any fob that isn't present doesn't get re-registered. This matters most when the key was stolen rather than lost, because someone could theoretically have it and know where you park.

Q: Does my 2021 Sienna smart key have an emergency blade inside it?

It does. There's a small release on the fob body. Slide it and the metal blade pops out. That blade fits the driver's door cylinder and gets you in manually if the fob battery is dead or the door handles aren't responding. Once you're inside, the van can still be started even with a completely dead fob battery. Hold the fob body directly against the start button and press the brake.

Q: My 2021 Sienna shows a key-not-detected warning but the fob is right in my hand. What's going on?

This comes up a lot on the 2021 and newer Siennas in owner forums. A few things cause it. First suspect is always the CR2450 battery. Even a battery that tests at acceptable voltage can cause detection failures if it's dropping under load or seated slightly off. The 2021 uses a larger cell than older Toyota fobs, and shops sometimes hand people the wrong size, which creates an intermittent connection. Second is interference.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2021 Sienna. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2021 Sienna smart key system doesn't have an onboard self-programming sequence. There's no ignition-turn trick, no button combination that enrolls a new fob. Programming requires a professional tool connected to the diagnostic port to register the new fob with the immobilizer. The fob you bought online isn't useless. It just needs someone with the right equipment to pair it.

2021 Toyota Sienna Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked on Upper State Street when the call came in. Guy had a 2021 Sienna, fully loaded, and he was standing in the parking lot of a shop off the same stretch. He'd already been burned once.

He'd searched for a locksmith a few weeks earlier when he locked himself out. Clicked the first sponsored result, got a price on the phone, and watched it triple the moment the tech showed up. That guy had no marked vehicle, handed him a hand-scrawled receipt, and gave him a fob that only half-worked. The sliding door buttons were dead. Engine start was intermittent. He'd been living with it because he didn't want to deal with another stranger at his car.

He found me through Google Guaranteed, saw the BSIS license number listed, and called. California's Bureau of Security and Investigative Services licenses locksmiths in this state. Background check, insurance, registered business. He asked for my license number before I drove over. I gave it to him, told him to look it up, and started heading his way.

When I got there I put the fob on the hood and we went through it together. The battery was the wrong size for the application. The previous guy had used whatever he had in his bag, and it had been making intermittent contact ever since. Swapped in the correct CR2450, reseated everything cleanly, then ran through all six buttons, tested both sliding door handles for touch unlock, and confirmed clean start behavior on the push-button.

Everything worked the way it was supposed to. He asked what the dealer would have charged to sort this out. I told him to call and find out, but that I was already done. He laughed.

Toyota Sienna Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2021 Sienna?▼

Call a mobile locksmith, not the dealer. Toyota dealer all-keys-lost quotes on the Sienna are not cheap, and they often can't get to it same-day, which means you're either towing the van or waiting. A mobile locksmith comes to you in Santa Barbara, does the key reset through the diagnostic port, programs the new fob, cuts the emergency blade insert, and tests everything before leaving. No tow, no overnight, no service department markup.
