A call came in from a guy parked off the road near Bridle Path in Simi Valley.
He had both fobs for his 2012 Sienna, which is the right situation to be in, but one had stopped working weeks ago and he had been ignoring it. Then the second one started acting up. Range was maybe two feet, the sliding door buttons were inconsistent, and the van threw a key warning on the dash when he tried to start it.

I got there, popped the working fob open first. The CR2032 inside had a little corrosion ring on the positive face, not a lot, but enough. Cleaned the contact, fresh battery, seated it correctly. The second fob had a cracked shell from a drop at some point. The electronics inside were fine. I transferred everything into a replacement case, new battery in that one too, tested it the same way I test any key before I close the job out: lock, unlock, walk the handles, confirm the start button sees both fobs, run every button.
He did not need new keys programmed at all. Just someone willing to actually look at what was in front of them instead of defaulting to a full replacement. He left with two working fobs and a fraction of what the dealer quote would have cost him, and I was back on the road in about twenty-five minutes.
