2002 Toyota Sienna
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to my location in Midtown Ventura?

Depends on where I am in the Ventura area when you call and what the schedule looks like. I give you a straight arrival window on the phone, not a four-hour range. Because I'm already mobile and running calls, I can usually reach you faster than a tow truck dispatch and a haul to the dealer would take. Toyota dealers are also running appointments, not walk-ins, for key work on a vehicle this age.

Q: Can I get a key made today?

Usually yes. I carry chipped blanks and cutting equipment for the 2002 Sienna in the service van. If the schedule has room and I have your blank in stock, I can be at your location same day. The dealer option for a vehicle this age sometimes means sourcing the blank, scheduling you out, and requiring a drop-off. That's a lot of overhead for a key that can be handled on-site.

Q: I had a spare key cut at a hardware store. The van cranks but won't start. Could that be the problem?

Very likely, yes. This is one of the most common calls I get on early-2000s Toyota transponder vehicles. A hardware store or big-box copy cuts the blade correctly but uses a blank with no chip inside. The blade fits, the engine turns over, but the immobilizer doesn't see a valid signal and kills the start. The van acts like it has a fuel or ignition problem when it's actually a key problem the whole time.

Q: The van starts fine most of the time but occasionally cranks without catching. Could it be the transponder key failing?

It can be. Intermittent no-starts on these are sometimes traced back to a chip that's cracked or delaminated inside the key head, often from being dropped or worn down over years of use. The immobilizer reads the chip on every start attempt, so a damaged chip gives you inconsistent results. Worth checking whether the no-starts correlate with a specific key if you have more than one.

2002 Toyota Sienna Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked on a side street off Main in Midtown Ventura. He had two keys for his 2002 Sienna. One had snapped at the neck, the other was a copy he'd had made at a hardware store years ago that "sort of worked sometimes." That day it stopped working entirely.

He wasn't stranded in the dramatic sense. The van was sitting right there, he just couldn't get it running. He'd already called the dealer and been told to tow it in and wait for an opening in their schedule.

I pulled up, decoded the lock, and cut a fresh key on a proper chipped blank. Then I enrolled it through the diagnostic port and tested ignition. Started clean on the first turn. The hardware store copy went in my hand as a reference and a reminder of how these jobs originate.

He mentioned the dealer quote almost as an afterthought. What he actually cared about was not having to arrange a tow from a street he needed to be off by end of day. The van left on its own power about forty minutes after I arrived.

Toyota Sienna Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a 2002 Toyota Sienna key replacement take?▼

On-site, plan for roughly 30 to 45 minutes from the time I arrive. The 2002 Sienna is a transponder turn-key setup, so the job is cutting the blade and enrolling the chip. If you still have a working key, adding a second is quicker. All-keys-lost takes a little longer because the immobilizer has to be accessed before new keys can be registered. Either way, you have a cut, programmed, and tested key before I leave your location.
