That's one of the more common complaints on these. The 2009 Sienna's immobilizer will allow the engine to crank but cut fuel or ignition if it doesn't recognize the key's transponder signal. You'll sometimes see a key-not-detected warning or a security indicator light that stays on or flashes during the crank attempt.

Before assuming the key is dead, check the ignition cylinder area for any metal key ring or other keys that might be sitting right against the ignition head. A cluster of keys or a thick metal fob directly against the cylinder can interfere with the transponder read range. Try the key alone, on a plain ring, and retry.

If the no-start persists with the key isolated, the transponder may have lost its enrollment, or the antenna ring around the ignition could have a wiring issue. Both are diagnosable on site. Don't let a shop tell you the whole ignition needs replacing before someone checks the antenna circuit first.

When that happens, the key gets cut fine but won't start the car, and now you've spent money on a blank that's scrap.
