2009 Toyota Sienna
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long should a replacement transponder key last on a 2009 Sienna?

A well-made replacement key should last as long as the original. The transponder itself is passive, meaning it has no battery and no moving electronic parts. It just sits inside the key head and responds to the ignition ring. That component doesn't wear out from use. What does wear is the physical key blade.

Q: What if my new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call me. We back up the work. If the key stops starting the car or develops any issue after we program it, we come back and make it right. That coverage matters on these jobs because a transponder key failure after programming is usually either a chip seating issue in the blank or a problem with the ignition ring antenna, and both of those are diagnosable.

Q: My 2009 Sienna cranks fine but won't start, and I see a key-related warning on the dash. Is my transponder key failing?

That's one of the more common complaints on these. The 2009 Sienna's immobilizer will allow the engine to crank but cut fuel or ignition if it doesn't recognize the key's transponder signal. You'll sometimes see a key-not-detected warning or a security indicator light that stays on or flashes during the crank attempt. Before assuming the key is dead, check the ignition cylinder area for any metal key ring or other keys that might be sitting right against the ignition head.

Q: I bought a replacement key blank online for my 2009 Sienna. Can you just program it, or do I need to buy a blank from you?

Depends on what you bought. If the blank has the correct transponder chip for this vehicle and the key head profile matches, there's a reasonable chance it can be cut and programmed. The catch is that a lot of blanks sold online for this generation Sienna are either mislabeled or carry a different chip than what the immobilizer expects.

2009 Toyota Sienna Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman at the coffee spot in Wagon Wheel reached out on a Tuesday morning. She'd found one key in her Sienna, no idea if there had ever been a second, and she wanted a spare cut and programmed before she lost the one she had.

She texted me the VIN before I left. That's the move. With the VIN I already had the correct blank pulled and prepped in the van on the way over.

When I got there she had her ID and registration ready, working key in hand. That combination, VIN ahead of time and a working key on site, is the fastest version of this job. I decoded the existing key, confirmed the cut matched what the VIN told me, and got the new blank cut right there in the lot.

Programming a second key on the 2009 Sienna with a working key present is a clean process. The transponder in the original key stays enrolled, the new one gets added alongside it. I ran both keys through the ignition multiple times and verified the engine responded correctly to each one. She walked away with two working keys, neither one a mystery.

The dealer quote she'd gotten ahead of time was not something she was excited to pay. What she paid me was a fraction of that, and she didn't have to schedule a drop-off or wait around a service waiting room.

Toyota Sienna Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket key blanks on a 2009 Toyota Sienna?▼

We use blanks that are verified to spec for this vehicle. On the 2009 Sienna, the transponder key has to match two things: the mechanical cut of the ignition cylinder and the transponder chip inside the head. If either one is off, the key either won't turn or the car won't start. Cheap blanks sourced from unknown suppliers sometimes have inconsistent chip placement or substandard key metal that wears the ignition wafers faster than it should.
