Got a call from a woman near Old Mission Santa Barbara. She had just left an urgent care with her kid and a bag of prescriptions in the back seat. Her 2002 Tahoe cranked but would not start in the lot. The SECURITY light was solid on the dash. She tried it a few more times, and it just kept cranking with no fire.

When I got there I plugged my IM608 into the OBD-II port under the dash. The BCM was rejecting the transponder read from her key. The PK3 chip in the blade had gone intermittent. It happens on these second-generation Tahoes, especially with keys that have taken some abuse. The resistor value drifts or the chip cracks internally, and the BCM just sees a mismatch and kills fuel injector pulse.
I cut a new B102 blade, matched the transponder to her BCM through the PK3 security relearn, and confirmed the SECURITY light cycled off after the 10-minute learn timer completed. Tested it three more times cold. Fired right up every time.
From her phone call to the engine running was under 50 minutes. She made it to the pharmacy with time to spare. Sometimes the gap between a locksmith and a dealer is just whether or not the car runs tonight.
