A guy from Downtown Ojai found me the way a lot of people do now: YouTube, months before he actually needed help.
He'd watched a GM key replacement video, saw the tools, saw the process, saw a real car getting worked on, and saved my number. When his 2020 Tahoe started throwing a key-not-detected warning on the dash, he didn't have to wonder who to call or what the job would look like.
He told me the fob had been acting up for a few weeks. Range was getting shorter. Sometimes he'd walk up to the Tahoe and nothing would happen. Then it got to where he was standing right at the door and the handle wasn't responding.
I met him in Downtown Ojai. Opened the fob on the hood. The CR2032 inside wasn't dead, but it was reading low voltage and one of the battery contacts had a slight flex to it, not making full contact. Cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh battery correctly, and ran through every button. Lock, unlock, the full set. Then I did what I always do: walked the perimeter, tested both front door handles, confirmed the start behavior, and checked range from a real distance.
That fixed about sixty percent of what he was describing. The remaining issue was that one of the fob buttons had a degraded response, a sign the board had seen some wear. We ended up doing a replacement fob, programmed on site through the diagnostic port. The old fob got erased from the system.
The whole job happened in his driveway. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number that made him pause. He didn't say much else about that part, and honestly, neither did I. The Tahoe started clean, all buttons confirmed, and he was done.
