2009 Chevrolet Tahoe
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Does the dealer really need the car towed in just to cut a replacement key?

For an all-keys-lost situation, most Chevy dealers will say yes. They need the vehicle in the bay for programming. That means a tow if you can't drive it, plus whatever they charge for parts and labor once it arrives. The whole process can stretch across a day or more depending on their schedule. A mobile locksmith skips all of that. I come to the vehicle, do the cut and the programming at your location, and you drive away.

Q: What do I need to show you to prove the vehicle is mine?

A valid photo ID and your registration or title. I verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb before I start anything. Same standard a dealer would hold you to. Once ownership is confirmed, I can get the key cut and programmed without the car ever leaving your location.

Q: My 2009 Tahoe starts and then dies a few seconds later. Could this be a key problem?

That specific pattern -- cranks, catches, stalls within a few seconds -- points toward the immobilizer not fully accepting the transponder signal. The engine starts on inertia and then the security system shuts it back down. A few things cause this. The transponder chip in the key can degrade over time, especially on a key that's been on a heavy keychain for years. The ignition coil ring that reads the chip can shift or crack.

Q: I bought a key blank online. Can you just program it, or do I need to buy one from you?

Bring it. As long as the blank is the correct type for the 2009 Tahoe, I can cut and program it. The main thing to watch is that not all blanks sold online actually carry a working transponder chip, even when the listing says they do. If the chip is missing or defective, the key will turn the ignition but the vehicle won't start. I can test the chip before I cut anything so you're not wasting a blank.

2009 Chevrolet Tahoe Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy had his 2009 Tahoe sitting in a parking structure off State Street, right in Downtown Santa Barbara. He called me from the street level because the key turned but the engine cranked and died immediately. Every time. He thought it was a fuel pump.

It wasn't the fuel pump.

The immobilizer wasn't recognizing the transponder. His key was worn down to the point where the blade still turned the cylinder, but the chip read was dropping out. That kind of failure gets misread constantly. People start pulling codes, replacing relays, calling tow trucks. He'd already been quoted a tow plus a diagnostic fee at the dealer before he found me.

I pulled up to the structure with my programmer and a key blank. Cut a fresh blade to his vehicle using the existing lock as a reference, programmed the transponder to his truck right there in the parking garage. The Tahoe fired up on the first try.

He mentioned what the dealer's estimate had been. I told him what he owed me. He just nodded. That was the whole reaction. Sometimes that's enough.

Chevrolet Tahoe Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I'm locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me in Downtown Santa Barbara?▼

Yes. I come to wherever the Tahoe is sitting -- parking lot, street, driveway, doesn't matter. I carry the blanks and programming equipment for this vehicle on the truck. You don't need a tow, you don't need a ride to a dealer, and you don't need to wait for a service window during business hours.
