2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy staying at a hotel near the Eastside in Santa Barbara called me on a Wednesday night. He had one key for his 2008 Tahoe and it snapped. Not lost, not stolen. Physically broke at the blade, right where the bow meets the cut portion. The key head with the transponder chip was still there in one piece, but the blade was bent and stuck in the door lock.

He had already called the dealership. They told him to tow it in the next morning, and they would work on it when they could get to it. That was before they even quoted him anything.

I got there about forty minutes after he called. First thing was getting the broken blade fragment out of the door lock without damaging the cylinder. That took a few minutes of careful work with extraction tools from the van. Once the cylinder was clear, I cut a new blade to match his vehicle using the door lock as a reference, then programmed the transponder through the OBD port. The immobilizer accepted the new key on the first cycle. He tested it himself, door lock and ignition both, before I packed anything up.

The whole thing was done before ten at night. He had meetings the next morning and made them. The dealer route would have cost him the tow, a full day of waiting, and a good chunk more money. That is usually how it goes.
