A guy at Oxnard State Beach Park had been fighting his 2011 Tahoe ignition for weeks. Jiggling the key, pulling it back halfway, pushing hard. Some days it just refused to turn over. He was out by the lot after a morning run and it finally locked up on him completely.
He told me the dealer wanted a full ignition cylinder replacement, new keys, and a reprogram. That is the standard dealer playbook on these. I have seen it a hundred times on GM Z-keyway trucks.
I got to his Tahoe and checked the cylinder. The wafers were the problem, not the housing. These B111 wafer stacks wear down with mileage, especially wafers 3 and 5, which carry the most spring tension on this cut pattern. They get thin, start tilting, and the key catches or binds.
Before I touched anything mechanical, I connected my ACDP to the OBD-II port and backed up the BCM data. That way the immobilizer stays intact no matter what happens with the lock. Then I decoded the cylinder, swapped the worn wafers, and cut a fresh B111-PT transponder key to match the repaired lock.
His separate remote (OUC60270, the four-button with the hatch release) synced right back up through a quick OBD relearn. I showed him the old wafers side by side with the new ones so he could see the wear for himself.
Ignition turns smooth now. He kept his original cylinder, saved a good chunk over the dealer route, and drove home instead of waiting on a tow truck.
