Upper Ojai is one of those areas where I don't mind the drive. Long road in, quiet at the top, and the calls out there tend to be interesting.
This one was a guy with a 1996 Honda Odyssey parked in his gravel driveway. He'd been using the key blade for weeks after his fob went dead, which was fine until his kids locked the doors from inside with the manual locks and then climbed out the side. He didn't have a working way to unlock remotely, and somewhere in all of that, one of the spare fobs had gone missing.
When I got there he handed me the original fob. CR2025 was completely flat, which wasn't surprising for a battery that old. Swapped the cell, reseated it, tested range. Nothing. Then I checked the contact points inside the housing and found a bit of oxidation on the negative terminal. Cleaned it, reassembled, still weak. At that point I ran through the onboard relearn sequence this generation supports, and it paired back cleanly. The fob was fine. It just needed that sequence to wake back up and associate properly after being dead long enough for the car to drop it.
He stood there and clicked it a few times at the van like he wasn't totally convinced yet. Locks cycled every time. That's usually when people relax.
He didn't need new hardware. The dealer would have sold him a new fob and charged for programming on top of it. He saved a good chunk, and it was done before the afternoon got away from him.
