1996 Honda Odyssey
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to Upper Ojai?

Typically within 30 to 45 minutes of your call, depending on where I'm running when you reach me. I'm a one-person mobile operation, so the tools, blanks, and equipment are always loaded and ready. No service bay queue, no waiting for a tech to free up. You call, I drive out to you.

Q: Can I get a replacement key and fob made the same day?

Yes. I carry key blanks and common replacement fobs for this generation on the truck, so same-day is the standard call, not a special situation. The dealer route on a 1996 Odyssey can get complicated. This fob is old enough that dealers don't stock it on the shelf anymore, and owners who've gone that route have run into parts-ordering delays that stretched into days or a week.

Q: My 1996 Odyssey fob worked fine, then I replaced the battery and now it does nothing. What happened?

This is one of the more common complaints I see with these older Honda remotes, and it's almost always one of two things. First, the replacement CR2025 may be generic or undersized. Some budget cells measure slightly thinner than spec and don't make solid contact with both terminals inside the housing. Even a hair of gap kills the signal entirely. Try a name-brand cell and press it firmly into place before closing the housing.

Q: Can I program a replacement fob for a 1996 Odyssey myself, or do I need a pro?

This generation actually supports an onboard relearn sequence, which puts it in a different category from newer Hondas that require a diagnostic tool for every programming job. The sequence is done from inside the vehicle without plugging anything in. That said, the steps are specific and order-sensitive, and if you're sourcing a replacement fob, it has to be the correct one for this generation before any relearn attempt is worth your time.

1996 Honda Odyssey Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Upper Ojai is one of those areas where I don't mind the drive. Long road in, quiet at the top, and the calls out there tend to be interesting.

This one was a guy with a 1996 Honda Odyssey parked in his gravel driveway. He'd been using the key blade for weeks after his fob went dead, which was fine until his kids locked the doors from inside with the manual locks and then climbed out the side. He didn't have a working way to unlock remotely, and somewhere in all of that, one of the spare fobs had gone missing.

When I got there he handed me the original fob. CR2025 was completely flat, which wasn't surprising for a battery that old. Swapped the cell, reseated it, tested range. Nothing. Then I checked the contact points inside the housing and found a bit of oxidation on the negative terminal. Cleaned it, reassembled, still weak. At that point I ran through the onboard relearn sequence this generation supports, and it paired back cleanly. The fob was fine. It just needed that sequence to wake back up and associate properly after being dead long enough for the car to drop it.

He stood there and clicked it a few times at the van like he wasn't totally convinced yet. Locks cycled every time. That's usually when people relax.

He didn't need new hardware. The dealer would have sold him a new fob and charged for programming on top of it. He saved a good chunk, and it was done before the afternoon got away from him.

How long does a 1996 Honda Odyssey key replacement take?▼

For a standard key and remote job on this generation, figure 30 to 45 minutes once I'm at the vehicle. That covers cutting the key blade, programming the remote, and walking through every button before I hand it back. All-keys-lost adds time. On this era of Honda, the relearn process has to be done in a specific sequence and the car needs to cycle through it cleanly, so add another 15 to 20 minutes on top of the standard window.
