Got a call from a guy at Oxnard State Beach Park. His 2010 Honda Odyssey wouldn't start in the pharmacy parking lot, and he needed his insulin from home. Car just cranked and cranked, green key icon blinking on the dash. Classic immobilizer rejection.
He'd already called the dealer. Earliest opening was the next afternoon. For a diabetic who needed to get home, that's not a scheduling inconvenience. That's a health problem.
I was about 15 minutes out. Pulled up, got the door open, and plugged my IM608 into the OBD-II port under the dash. His remote head key had a dead CR1616, which killed the lock and unlock buttons, but that wasn't why it wouldn't start. He'd had a jump start earlier that week after leaving a dome light on, and the immobilizer had lost transponder sync. The ID46 chip was there, just not talking to the ECU anymore.
Swapped the CR1616, ran the transponder relearn through OBD, and tested every function. Lock, unlock, panic, engine start, engine restart. Then I walked him through the manual start backup: hold the fob right against the steering column if a battery ever dies on him again.
From his phone call to engine running, about 40 minutes. He drove to the pharmacy, picked up his prescription, went home. Sometimes the gap between a locksmith and a dealership isn't about price. It's about time you don't actually have.
