I was in the Sea Air neighborhood of Oxnard when the call came in. A guy in a pharmacy parking lot, 2017 Honda Odyssey, wouldn't start. He'd been pressing the fob and getting nothing. His voice had that flat, controlled tone people use when they're trying not to panic but they're already past the point of calm.
He'd already called the dealer. Next-day appointment. He was diabetic, his insulin was at home, and he was standing in a parking lot with a dead van between him and a grocery run he needed to make.
I told him I was fifteen minutes out, and I was.
When I got there he was sitting on the curb next to the van, fob in his hand, still pressing it like it might change its mind. I could see why he was frustrated. On the surface it looked like total failure.
I popped the fob open first, before I touched anything else. The CR2032 was reading low. Not completely flat, but not enough. On this van, that matters more than people expect, because the fob has to power both the remote functions and the transponder communication at the same time. A battery that's borderline can look like a much bigger problem.
New battery. Fob snapped back together. He pressed lock. The van chirped.
But it still wouldn't start. That's where the jump start he'd had earlier in the week came in. A hard power event on these can knock the key sync off, and his had. I plugged in at the OBD port, ran the relearn with the key present, and watched it confirm. Then I had him do the honors and press the start button himself.
It started on the first press.
I walked him through the backup blade in the fob before I left. He didn't know it was in there. A lot of people don't.
From his phone call to his engine running was under forty minutes. The dealer comparison barely came up. Getting him to the pharmacy before the lot closed was the whole job.
