I was parked near The Oaks Mall area in Thousand Oaks on a Tuesday afternoon, finishing up a different job, when a call came in. An Odyssey owner had walked out of the mall to a van that wouldn't acknowledge her fob at all. Door handles weren't responding, start button was ignoring her. She'd already tried holding the fob against the start button, which is the right instinct, and it still didn't fire up.
When I got there, she handed me the fob and the first thing I noticed was how light it felt. Popped it open on the hood. The CR2032 was still in there, but it was sitting slightly cocked, one edge lifted off the contact. It looked fine to the eye. It wasn't fine.
Reseated it, snapped the case back together, walked to the driver door. Handle lit up. She laughed a little, the kind of laugh that's mostly relief.
But I didn't hand it back and leave. That's where the job actually starts. I went through every button, walked about 30 feet toward the mall entrance and tested lock and unlock from a distance, then came back and did three clean start-and-shutdown cycles. On a 7-button fob there's a lot to check, and a fob that's been bouncing around a purse next to keys and a phone can have contact issues that show up on one function and not another.
Everything checked clean. She was back inside the mall before I'd packed up my kit.
She mentioned she'd almost called the dealer. I told her what that afternoon would have looked like: tow, service appointment, probably a day without the van. Sometimes the fix is small. The job is making sure nothing else is waiting to surprise you before you drive away.
