2008 Honda Odyssey
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know you are not one of those bait-and-switch locksmith operations?

Fair question, and it comes up a lot. The pattern with scam operations is a low quote on the phone followed by a number that doubles or more once they're in your driveway. By then you feel stuck. Here's how to protect yourself: ask for a license number and a firm written quote before anyone shows up. A legitimate locksmith operating in California can give you both.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like my original?

It should, and I verify that before I leave. On the 2008 Odyssey the remote head key has to do two separate jobs: the transponder side has to register with the immobilizer so the car will start, and the remote side has to communicate with the body control module for lock and unlock. I test engine start with the new key, confirm the security system accepts it, and walk all three buttons on the remote.

Q: My 2008 Odyssey starts fine but the remote stopped locking and unlocking. Do I need a whole new key?

Usually not. This is one of the more common calls I get on these. The remote and the transponder are in the same key head but they run on separate systems. If the car starts without any warning on the dash, the transponder is being read fine. A dead or weak CR1616 battery will kill the remote signal first while leaving the start function intact. Swap the battery before assuming the key itself is bad.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2008 Odyssey. Can you still make a key without having a working one?

Yes. All-keys-lost on this generation Odyssey is a standard job. It takes longer than add-a-key because I have to pull the key code from the VIN or decode the lock rather than cloning from an existing key, and the immobilizer has to be accessed through the diagnostic port to register a new key from scratch. Have your VIN, your ID, and your proof of ownership ready. That speeds things up on my end considerably.

2008 Honda Odyssey Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was on Main Street finishing another job when a message came in from a woman over in The Avenue.

She runs a small business out of a shop there, and her spare Odyssey key had been sitting in a junk drawer so long the battery had corroded inside the fob. The main key was still working, but she had a trip coming up and wanted a real spare in hand before she left.

She texted me the VIN before I even got back in the van. That's the kind of prep that shaves time off the job in a real way.

When I pulled up she already had her registration and license ready on the counter. The working key was on the table next to it. I had the right blank prepped on the drive over because the VIN told me everything I needed about which key this car takes. Cut the blade, cloned the transponder from her working key, got the remote registered to the car.

Then I did what actually matters: tested it. Started the car with the new key, confirmed it killed the security warning, walked the lock and unlock on both front doors, and ran all three buttons. Everything worked clean.

She was back helping a customer before I had my tools packed up. The dealer had quoted her a wait of several days for a parts order and a service appointment. She got it done on her lunch hour instead, for a fraction of what they wanted.

Honda Odyssey Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Honda vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed by the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, the state agency that regulates automotive locksmiths. We carry full liability insurance. You can ask for the license number before I arrive and verify it directly with the state. For a 2008 Odyssey, the job involves both cutting the blade and programming the transponder and remote to the car, and we have the equipment and credentials to do all of it on site in Ventura.
